What Does Certification Mean?
Nancy and Don are certified through the National Guild of
Hypnotists. What does that mean?
There are educational requirements for any type of work that
a person chooses to do. Some are fairly simple and can be
learned with on the job training. Others are more complex and
require extensive training, either in special classes or in
an institution of higher learning, and often require approval
from a state licensing board or other certifying entity.
Oklahoma does not offer or require state licensure to be a
hypnotherapist, but there are organizations who offer
training and certification. The National Guild of Hypnotists
(NGH), the oldest and largest organization of its kind,
offers various levels of certification. The Guild is
dedicated to the practice of hypnotism as a profession. They
have stringent requirements not only of the educational
background, but also professional behavior. The Guild
requires a minimum of 100 hours of specialized education in
hypnosis to be considered for their basic certification exam.
Once the exam is passed, each certified hypnotist is required
to obtain 15 hours of Continuing Education annually to
maintain that certification.
As a hypnotist grows and improves upon the basic skills, the
NGH officially recognizes this higher level of achievement by
administering additional tests to achieve advanced
certifications. A Certified Hypnotist (CH), who meets all of
the qualifications, can apply for the next step in the NGH
certification ladder - Board Certified Hypnotist (BCH). This
requires two written (non family) references, a 2000 word
paper suitable for publication, oral and written exams.
Additional certifications, with ever higher qualifications
and requirements, are Fellow (FNGH) and Diplomate (DNGH).
Nancy Reno took the board exam and became a Board Certified
Hypnotist (BCH) in August, 2004.
